Spiritual Training

Our Spiritual preparedness goes hand in hand with our practical preparedness. The time we spend on the range training is important, but it is enhanced by purpose.

Templar Order patron Bernard of Clairvaux wrote that the Templars were “a fearless knight, and secure on every side, for his soul is protected by the armor of faith, just as his body is protected by the armor of steel. He is thus doubly-armed, and need fear neither demons nor men.”
Our modern tactical industry is enamored by ancient warrior culture. Frequently we will see a brand or a person displaying a graphic of a Spartan or Viking. Perhaps they might display a phrase like “Molon Labe” or “Deus Vult”. But, are we associating ourselves with these things because we aspire to be like their originators or is it just a fad that you have hooked onto to reinforce false bravado?

But do those who display shirts and patches depicting these ancient warrior notions truly grasp the spiritual commitment that they demonstrate? The Book of Daniel, 3:17-18 lays out a clear bar for the depth of this faith, “17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up!”.

Just to be clear, this is faith that is strong enough to be ok with walking into a blazing fire whether there was divine intervention or not.

1 Samuel 17:45-47 further displays the level of commitment: “45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

Previous to this passage, David declined ACTUAL armor and fearlessly committed to single combat and opponent that had struck fear in the hearts of the Israelites. He instead took up what is the armor of God that is defined by Paul in Ephesians 6:10-17. “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

I would pose to you to consider these thoughts and how it affects your readiness in life events. Preparedness does not just mean physical, it is also spiritual. Someone who is equipped for both will have a clear advantage.
